The Faith of Devotees

The principal deity (Moolnayak) of the temple is Lord Adinath Bhagwan. This ancient and miraculous idol is regarded as extraordinarily divine. Revered Jain Acharyas and monks have described it as a living embodiment of the Jina, capable of providing a direct spiritual experience of the Lord.

It is believed that devotees who seek refuge in this sacred idol find relief from physical and mental suffering, while its remembrance instills immense inner strength and peace. Saints have stated that the idol appears to transform its expression continuously, offering new inspiration and guidance at every moment. This highly revered Chaturth Kaal idol is famously known as “Sanganer Wale Baba.”

Miracles and Spiritual Significance

Muni Shri Sudhasagar Ji Maharaj, through historical records, inscriptions, and his own spiritual realization, highlighted the extraordinary miracles associated with Sanganer Wale Baba. Since then, thousands of devotees visit daily, believing that their wishes are fulfilled and obstacles removed through the blessings of Baba.

Devotees who perform worship, Abhishek, Aarti, offer lamps, umbrellas, and other religious services are believed to receive spiritual and worldly benefits. For this reason, Baba is lovingly known by devotees as Sankatmochan, Shantidata, Vighnahar, and the Miraculous Saint of the Fourth Era.

The Seven-Storey Temple and the Underground Chaityalaya

One of the temple’s most remarkable features is its seven-storey structure. At the center of its underground chamber lies an ancient Jain Chaityalaya protected by Yaksha deities. Tradition holds that only highly accomplished Digambar Jain ascetics possessing extraordinary spiritual powers can enter this sacred chamber.

Whenever the Chaityalaya is brought out for public viewing, the ascetic responsible must make a solemn vow specifying the duration for which it will remain above ground. It must be returned within the pledged period; any delay is believed to result in inauspicious signs. This unique phenomenon is regarded as one of the temple’s greatest miracles and serves as evidence of its immense antiquity.

Discovery of the Underground Idols

The miraculous idols hidden beneath the earth were first brought out for public darshan in 1933 by Acharya Shri 108 Shantisagar Ji Maharaj. According to temple tradition, Acharya Shantisagar Ji received a divine vision of the underground shrine in a dream while staying at the temple.

The next morning, he gathered the temple trustees, described his vision, and requested access to the hidden chamber. He entered the cave and remained there for two days. Upon emerging, he reported seeing 64 idols, 88 small yantras, and two large yantras. Later, accompanied by selected trustees, he brought the entire Chaityalaya out for public darshan.

He also prohibited anyone from exploring certain passages within the cave and installed a stone inscription warning visitors not to proceed further. He established a five-year interval for bringing out the Chaityalaya and ensured that the trustees pledged not to reveal it before that period.

Subsequently, the underground shrine was brought out by several revered Jain saints, including:

• Acharya Shri Deshbhushan Ji Maharaj (1971)
• Acharya Shri Vimalsagar Ji Maharaj (1986)
• Ganadharacharya Shri Kunthusagar Ji Maharaj (1992)
• Muni Pungav Shri Sudhasagar Ji Maharaj (1994 and 1999)

Historic Darshan of 1999

From 20–24 June 1999, a grand Mahamastakabhishek was performed with 1,008 kalashas. During this historic occasion, Muni Shri Sudhasagar Ji Maharaj, through the power of his spiritual austerities, brought out an additional 32 idols from the fourth underground level beyond the previously known chambers. Nearly one million devotees were blessed with their darshan.

Afterward, Muni Shri Sudhasagar Ji remarked:

"People travel far and wide seeking solutions to their troubles. I say that not only are the idols of Sanganer miraculous, but even offering reverence to this temple carries a spiritual power unmatched anywhere else in the world."

Legends and Divine Experiences

Local traditions speak of extraordinary occurrences witnessed decades ago. Residents living near the temple reported hearing the sound of horses arriving around midnight, followed by the ringing of bells and ceremonial music from within the closed temple. By morning, droplets of water were often found on the idols, leading devotees to believe that celestial beings had performed Abhishek during the night.

Another well-known legend tells of a yellow serpent marked with black patterns that would emerge within the temple, moving from one idol to another as though offering worship. After completing its circumambulation, it would proceed to the Kshetrapal deity, raise its head in reverence, and then mysteriously disappear.

A Living Miracle

Temple caretakers from earlier generations, including Bodu Mali and later his son Puran Mali, are said to have occasionally found an old silver coin within the temple premises as a divine blessing for their dedicated service.

Even today, countless devotees believe that sincere prayers offered before Sanganer Wale Baba bring peace, strength, and fulfillment. The continuously growing number of pilgrims—especially on Sundays when thousands visit from morning until evening—stands as a testament to the unwavering faith and spiritual power associated with this sacred Atishaya Kshetra.
